JULY 2, 2008 – 10:00 PM

INFORMATION PHONELINE:  (509) 826-0455                         EMAIL:  waimt2@comcast.net

WEBSITE:  www.wa-imt2.org

LOCATION:  The Rattlesnake Point fire is burning 10 miles southwest of Okanogan, Washington near Highway 97.   The lightning caused fire began at 9:00 p.m. on June 30.  Incident Commander Rex Reed and members of the Washington Incident Management Team 2 assumed command of the fire today at 6:00 p.m.   Some structures are potentially threatened along Old Highway 97 and Davis Canyon Road.  No injuries have been reported.

 ACRES: 448

FIRE CAUSE: Lightning

CONTAINMENT: 30%

VEGETATION TYPE AND TERRAIN:  The fire is burning in scattered timber, sagebrush and range land in steep, rocky terrain.   Warm weather conditions, rugged terrain and inaccessibility to roads challenges firefighting capabilities.  Firefighter and public safety is the first priority on the Rattlesnake Point fire.

FIRE SITUATION:  Today, fire suppression crews worked on the divisions closest to the fire activity utilizing hand crews and dozers.  A Canadian Airtanker and two Type 2 helicopters dropped retardant and water throughout the day cooling areas of hot spots as needed.   A CL215 water scooper was also utilized on the fire.  These aircraft are well known for their ability to scoop large amounts of water while flying.

 ROAD CLOSURE:   None

The Washington Incident Management Team 2 appreciates the patience and support from the public as firefighters deal with the fire situation.
